Uganda: Museveni criticizes World Bank for holding up funding over anti-gay law
Yoweri Museveni, the president of Uganda, has once more criticized the World Bank for cutting off funding, saying that the institution is mistaken if it believes that the action will intimidate Ugandans.
In a statement published on his X (previously Twitter) account on Thursday, Mr. Museveni called the World Bank “shallow and insufferable imperialist actors who do not know where to stop”.
The World Bank cut off its support to Uganda last week because of a contentious anti-homosexuality law that was passed in May and went against the organization’s principles.
The harshness of the law, which imposes death or life in prison sentences for certain same-sex acts, has drawn criticism from all over the world.
Last week, Mr. Museveni responded to the World Bank by accusing it of attempting to force Uganda to change the law by stopping funding, but he added that Uganda would still advance even without the World Bank’s assistance.
Mr. Museveni reiterated on Thursday that the funding withdrawal would not stop Uganda’s economic transformation. The World Bank’s drastic action, he continued, would actually help Uganda’s efforts to lower its external debt and increase its independence.
Several Western allies still support Uganda, according to Mr. Museveni, but they are intimidated about continue doing so.
