The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, has requested President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s intervention in order to prevent the Bank of Ghana (BoG) from moving forward with plans to construct a new headquarters building.

The Parliamentary Minority has voiced strong opposition to the $250 million project and has threatened to picket at the Central Bank’s offices.

Given the Ghanaian economy’s current state, the Dormaahene has claimed that the plans to build a new headquarters are misguided.

He was speaking at his palace in Dormaa in the Bono Region on Thursday when a delegation paid a courtesy call on him.

“We heard that the BoG is building a new headquarters at a cost of 250 million dollars. That is about a quarter of the money we are seeking from the IMF. We want the President to intervene. He should meet with them and rescind that decision and communicate same to us,” he said.

In the meantime, the BoG has been given seven days to respond to a request for information made by the Minority caucus in Parliament, in accordance with Section 18 of the Right to Information Act (RTI) (Act 989), regarding the cost of its new headquarters, which is being built in Accra.

The letter was signed on behalf of Kwame Governs Agbodza, Chief Whip of the Minority caucus, by Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bawku Central Constituency.

“My name is Mahama Ayariga Esq and I am the representative of Bawku Central constituency in Parliament on the ticket of the NDC. Kindly provide information within 7 working days from the date of this letter,” he added.

The Minority is requesting details on the procedures used to acquire the land needed to build the new headquarters, as well as the names of the consultants and project managers.
