High-ranking military officials from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have arrived in the country for a pivotal meeting today, focusing on potential military involvement in Niger.

Notably absent from this conference are the Chiefs of Defense Staff from Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger. The aim of the meeting is to strategize on the optimal approach for deploying troops to Niger in order to reinstate constitutional order after a Military junta ousted President Mohammed Bazuom.

Despite ECOWAS Leaders’ intentions to dispatch troops to Niger, this move has encountered strong opposition within Ghana. The Parliamentary Minority has declared its intention to oppose any endeavor by the President to deploy soldiers to Niger.

ECOWAS has unequivocally condemned the attacks perpetrated by armed groups in Niger, which have resulted in the unfortunate deaths of numerous Nigerien soldiers.

On July 27, soldiers, predominantly from the presidential guard, took control of Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum, precipitating the annulment of the constitution, suspension of all governmental bodies, and the sealing of the nation’s borders.

President Mohamed Bazoum has remained in the custody of the presidential guard since July 27, notwithstanding ECOWAS’ admonitions for the military to relinquish power to the constitutionally elected President.

In a formal statement, ECOWAS lamented the multiple assaults on Nigerien soldiers by armed groups, underlining the necessity for a return to constitutional governance as the means to address the security crisis in Niger.
