Kumasi Technical University refutes allegations of sacking students due to delayed fee payments
Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has dismissed claims that it expelled more than 2,000 students for not meeting fee payment deadlines.
In an official communication, the university clarified that no students have been expelled; rather, those who have not completed registration for the Second Semester of the 2022/2023 Academic Year have been advised to postpone their academic programs.
The institution highlighted that it had extended the registration deadline on multiple occasions, but a notable number of students still did not comply.
Initially set for May 29, 2023, the registration deadline was extended successively to June 5, July 9, and July 28. The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) subsequently requested another extension.
“Despite the Executives of the SRC setting a deadline of 3rd August, 2023, the University added a human face and formally ended course registration for students on 7th August, 2023, when even the End-of-Second-Semester Examination had begun. After these many concessions, there are still 648 students who have not registered, as opposed to the 2,000 that some media houses had stated.”
The university clarified that the decision was made by its Academic Board, not by the Chancellor, Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor, as falsely claimed.
While the institution maintains a policy of withdrawing students who do not register, in this instance, it chose a more lenient approach, advising those students who hadn’t registered to defer their programs.
KsTU reassured that there is no tension on campus and emphasized that more than 11,000 students who completed their registration are currently taking their exams comfortably.
The official statement reiterated the university’s dedication to providing high-quality education to all its students and affirmed its commitment to collaborating with students to ensure successful registration and completion of their studies.
