Edinburgh firm working towards development of early Alzheimer’s test

A research company in Edinburgh is working to develop a new blood test that will help detect Alzheimer’s disease earlier.

On a number of initiatives, Scottish Brain Sciences has partnered with and Roche Diagnostics, a leading global healthcare company.

They are looking into the earliest signs of neurodegenerative disease, which, if found, could speed up patient treatment.

Early intervention could potentially even stop late-stage dementia from developing.

The work could have “big impacts,” according to Prof. Craig Ritchie, the founder of Scottish Brain Sciences.

“Early detection will be transformative in the way we assess, manage, and conceptualize clinically Alzheimer’s disease”, he said.

“It will open the door to interventions used very early in the course of disease that are better targeted than current treatments.”

Memory loss, confusion, and difficulty communicating are all possible effects of Alzheimer’s. It is the primary cause of dementia.

Blood-based bio-markers, which are biological indicators of the body’s internal health, will help researchers learn more about the early warning signs.
