Clement Apaak finds the proposal to rename UG after JB Danquah to be unacceptable
Dr. Clement Apaak, the Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee in Parliament, has expressed his strong opposition to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s suggestion that the University of Ghana could potentially be renamed after Joseph Boakye (J.B.) Danquah.
Apaak argued that such a proposal is unacceptable, highlighting the president’s consistent efforts to elevate his ancestors’ significance in Ghanaian history.
This response comes in the wake of President Akufo-Addo’s statement during the University of Ghana’s 75th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service, where he hinted at the possibility of renaming the institution in honor of J.B. Danquah.
The president commended Danquah’s resolute commitment and pivotal role in mobilizing Ghanaians to establish the university.
Dr. Apaak shared his perspective on this matter in an interview. He emphasized that renaming the university isn’t warranted, drawing attention to the trend where President Akufo-Addo has been inclined to emphasize his ancestral heritage and grant his forebears prominent positions in Ghana’s historical narrative.
Apaak pointed out that is worth noting that JB Danquah is related to the president’s family, and per previous observations, there are indications that if the president had his way, the University of Ghana would be named after JB Danquah.
He added that such an approach shouldn’t be adopted. There is a general pattern where President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo is inclined to celebrate his lineage and ensure his ancestors hold significant places in Ghana’s history.
