Go About Parliamentary Procedures With Seriousness – Nana Nketisa Advises

The Omanhene of the Essikaodo Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, has expressed concern at the attitude of some members of Parliament during Parliamentary proceedings.

According to him, it is inappropriate for members to hoot or laugh at fellow members, especially during serious discussions, and added that such attitudes do not depict the positions they hold as well as validate the confidence reposed in them by their electorates.

At a public forum held in Takoradi for institutions and residents, Nana Nketsia said some level of seriousness is needed if members of Parliament want the public contribution to sustain the gains so far in the country’s democracy.

He said Parliament is the house of sovereignty, as the President cannot declare war on another country without the approval of the Parliament, hence, if Ghana is corrupt, then Parliament is not doing its part to curb corrupt activities.

He entreated the MPs to interact with their electorates from time to time to explain to them some happenings in the House.

“This institution known as Parliament for me as an African is more important than the other things they say. If Parliament has not said anything, forget the Executive. If you allow the executive to go before Parliament, then you’ve lost it.

Parliament didn’t do anything about the Ameri and Covid thing. The spirit of the Constitution must be maintained by Parliament.” He said.

“We in the Western Region have been complaining, we don’t have representation in Cabinet, and it’s Parliament to see to this that spirit is carried on.

You ask yourself what is Parliament doing? Sometimes, you look at the Parliamentary sittings and they are hollow, and you ask yourself where is the committee?
Sometimes, you seem that they are even joking in Parliament. What are they taking seriously about this country?” Nana Nketsia added.
