Ethiopia: Authorities crack down on gay sex in hotels

Ethiopia

Authorities in Ethiopia claim to have cracked down on hotels, bars, and entertainment venues in the nation’s capital where it is alleged that homosexual activities are occurring.

An organization of the government, the Addis Ababa Peace and Security Administration Bureau, declared it was taking action “against institutions where homosexual acts are being carried out”.

The city authority said in a statement on Facebook that the raid on the guest house was the result of tip-offs from the public.

It added that it would continue raids in other locations while requesting that the public report such activities to the police.

While homosexual acts are illegal in Ethiopia, there haven’t been any recent reports of cases or convictions connected to them.

An LGBT advocacy group, House of Guramayle, claimed earlier this week that Ethiopia was experiencing “unprecedented attacks on individuals based on their real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity”.

It urged social media companies to deal with violent hate speech videos and urged local and international human rights organizations to denounce such attacks.
