Cecilia Dapaah’s cedi and dollar account frozen by the OSP as part of ongoing investigations
In the most recent update, it has come to light that both cedi and dollar accounts owned Cecilia Dapaah have been frozen by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), as part of an ongoing investigation.
The challenges faced by former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah, have not abated since the scandal involving significant sums of money purportedly stolen by her domestic helpers at her residence in Accra.
Sources have revealed that the OSP has submitted a motion to validate the confiscated funds retrieved from Ms. Dapaah’s home, as well as to formalize the freezing of her bank accounts.
The OSP’s inquiry centers on potential corruption and corruption-related infractions by Ms. Dapaah, prompted by the revelation that she possessed more than $1 million in her residence. This occurs concurrently with law enforcement and the Attorney General’s prosecution of individuals accused of pilfering the alleged funds from the former minister’s residence.
Ms. Dapaah garnered widespread attention in July 2023 when the Chronicle Newspaper reported that her domestic aides were being taken to court over allegations of stealing $1 million, along with 300,000 euros and substantial sums of cedis. Personal belongings belonging to the ex-minister and her husband, valued at several thousands of Ghana Cedis and dollars, were also allegedly taken.
Following public outcry, Cecilia Dapaah resigned from her post. She was subsequently apprehended by the OSP and later released on bail.
On July 24, 2023, officials from the Office of the Special Prosecutor conducted a search at the former Minister of Sanitation’s residence.
The OSP released a statement stating, “At 11:55 GMT on 24 July 2023, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, who resigned from the position of Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources on 22 July 2023, was placed under arrest by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in respect of suspected corruption and corruption-related offences regarding large amounts of money and other valuable items reportedly stolen from her residence.”
