In France, a holiday home for people with learning disabilities caught fire, leaving eleven people unaccounted for.
Following a call to emergency services at 06:30 local time on Wednesday, close to 80 firefighters were dispatched to the La Forge fire.
A local official told the AFP news agency that the 11 missing people are tconsidered to be “potentially deceased.”
A building used by a nonprofit organization that assists young people with disabilities is where the fire appears to have started.
Following the evacuation of 17, at least one person has been taken to the hospital.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, who confirmed that a rescue effort is ongoing, said it was likely that a number of people were injured or killed as a result of the fire in the town, which is located close to Wintzenheim and the German border.
The Haut-Rhin local government issued a statement in which it revealed that the 11 missing individuals were a group from Nancy, another city in eastern France.
76 firefighters and four fire engines were dispatched to battle the blaze, and despite the fire’s intensity, they were able to quickly put it out.
The people who were missing after the fire are now thought to be “potentially deceased,” according to the head of the Bas-Rhin prefecture in eastern France.
French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne and Families Minister Aurore Bergé will be traveling to Wintzenheim In order to support the victims and their families.
