Today, August 7, 2023, marks the commencement of the weeklong Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for a vast number of students, exceeding 600,000 in total.

Among these students, there are 300,323 males and 300,391 females representing various schools nationwide, totaling 18,993 in count.

This year’s cohort of candidates constitutes the final group to undergo the longstanding Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) system, which has been operational for over three decades.

With the implementation of a novel curriculum in 2019, a fresh examination format is set to be introduced for the inaugural group of Junior High School students in the upcoming year, 2024.

In 2024, pupils will be required to complete the Junior High School leaving examination, which will be structured around the innovative Standard-based curriculum.

Essentially, the year 2024 will mark the inception of a fresh era in student assessment, ushering in a new BECE and signaling transformative changes.

However, the Coalition of Concerned Teachers is advocating for a well-defined roadmap concerning the forthcoming Standard-based curriculum examination.

Adokwei Ayikwie Awule, the Director of Communications for the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, emphasized, “We are seeking a comprehensive plan for the Standard-based curriculum examination.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) issued a statement on August 3, advising candidates partaking in the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination to abstain from engaging in misconduct or any actions that might hinder the realization of their ambitions and objectives.
