Speaker of Parliament Backs Western Region’s Demand For A Fair Share Of Natural Resources
Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has lamented on the state of the Western Region as a resource-based region.
According to him, he believes that there is nothing wrong with a locality demanding a fair percentage of the revenue generated from the resource to develop.
“There’s nothing wrong with a percentage being allocated for the development of the region. That is the right thing to do everywhere. And the rest can be shared evenly around the country.
I will support the call for a percentage of whatever is discovered to be used in the area that is discovered. That’s very important.
I don’t like the state of Obuasi, neither do I like it of Prestea, neither do I like the state Western region is in,” He said.
He lamented the low level of development in resource-based towns including Prestea, Nzema, Tarkwa, and the Western region as a whole as unacceptable.
This comes in the wake of his interaction with the media across the country which made a stop in the Western Region.
He further advised that we must not overly concentrate on natural resources but also concentrate on building human resource capacity.
