Mahama deems the decision to prioritize National Cathedral over the Saglemi housing project as “unacceptable”

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has vehemently criticized President Nana Akufo-Addo’s decision to abandon the Saglemi Housing Project in favor of allocating more than GHc500 million to the National Cathedral endeavor.

In a post on his Facebook page, the former President alleged that the government’s choice to forsake the Saglemi Housing project stems solely from its initiation during his tenure.

On August 1, President Akufo-Addo held a ceremonial sod-cutting event to commence the construction of 8,000 units of affordable housing, supported by the private sector.

During this event, President Akufo-Addo justified the abandonment of the Saglemi Housing Project, asserting that its completion would have escalated the national debt. In response, former President Mahama criticized the government, asserting that its inability to secure funds for the Saglemi housing project while dedicating a substantial sum to the National Cathedral is a “humiliating slap in the face of Ghanaians.”

He contended that the government’s priorities appear to be misplaced, as it is willing to invest significantly in the massive undertaking of the National Cathedral but overlooks a housing initiative aimed at providing affordable accommodations for Ghanaians.

He mentioned that it is beyond acceptable for Akufo-Addo to commit over half a billion cedis to a national cathedral project that has ultimately faltered due to corruption and is now abandoned, yet declines to allocate resources to finalize a housing project benefiting numerous Ghanaian families. Understanding the tendencies of the NPP government, it seems they declined to complete the Saglemi housing project solely due to its origin under John Mahama and an NDC administration.

Mahama said leaders must consistently prioritize the welfare of their citizens and ensure they reap the rewards of government resources and projects, regardless of the initiators.

“The misplaced priorities of a government that claim it is unable to raise money to complete the Saglemi housing project and yet is willing to spend half a billion cedis on the largest civil excavation in Africa is a humiliating slap in the face of Ghanaians who entrusted Akufo Addo with their mandate.”

“Just think about the countless number of Ghanaian families who could have had decent living conditions over the past 7 years and the individuals who could have had a place to truly call home in Saglemi.”
