A group warns ECOWAS that military involvement in Niger could result in unnecessary loss of lives

Africans

The Pan-African movement known as Africans Rising has strongly condemned the recent military takeover in Niger. Soldiers, primarily from the presidential guard, seized President Mohamed Bazoum on July 27, resulting in the dissolution of the constitution, suspension of institutions, and closure of borders.

President Bazoum remains in the custody of the presidential guard since July 2. In response, Africans Rising has urged international and regional bodies, including the African Union and ECOWAS, to engage in constructive dialogues with all relevant parties to ensure peace and stability.

The movement underscores the importance of peaceful resolutions and disagrees with the military intervention threats by some ECOWAS member states. Africans Rising believes such actions could lead to loss of innocent lives and worsen the nation’s troubles.

They advocate for dialogue and diplomatic measures instead, without worsening the plight of the impoverished population.

Africans Rising also cautions European and Western powers against meddling in African states’ internal affairs. They firmly reject turning any part of Africa into a battleground for proxy wars among competing powers. The movement emphasizes Africa’s sovereignty, asserting that the continent should be treated independently, not as an extension of any other country or continent.

Below is the official statement from Africans Rising:
