In honour of Morocco’s Revolution of the King and the People, which was observed on August 20, King Mohammed VI has pardoned 653 prisoners.

The beneficiaries of the royal pardon, who are either in custody or are serving a suspended sentence, were revealed by the Ministry of Justice. 16 people who have received convictions for acts of terrorism and extremism are on the list.

King Mohammed VI has pardoned “ prisoners convicted in cases of extremism and terrorism, who have obtained the royal approval after they officially expressed their attachment to the unwavering and sacred constants of the Nation and national institutions, revised their ideological orientations and rejected extremism and terrorism,” the Ministry of Justice said.

Those who received pardons included those who had their sentences commuted from life in prison to fixed jail terms, those who had their sentences lengthened, and those who received pardons for the entirety of their remaining jail terms.

Some criminals received pardons that reduced their prison sentences, but their fines were still maintained. Some prisoners received a pardon over their prison sentences and fines, while others had their fines cancelled.

On religious and statutory holidays, the King frequently frees prisoners and pardons criminals.
