EKMA Says It Is Working To Halt Child Labour

The Municipal Chief Executive of the Effia Kwesiminstsim Municipal Assembly, EKMA, Mr Kojo Acquah has indicated that child labour still exists in communities, and the Assembly is working tirelessly to bring the canker to a halt.

Child labour he observed comes in the form such as street hawking, engagement of children as bus conductors (trotro mates) and others.

He mentioned this at the 2nd ordinary meeting at the 4th session of EKMA.

He noted that the Assembly has put some measures in place to curb activities of child labour.

Mr Acquah said the Assembly joined the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations with other CSOs to mark this year’s World Day against Child Labour under the theme; Intensify Action Against Child Labour; Do it Fast, do it Now”.

World Day Against Child Labour aims to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it.

Each year on 12 June, the Day brings together governments, employers and worker organizations, and civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.

As part of the celebrations, Mr Acquah mentioned engaging students within the Municipality in civic education, and public sensitisation on child labour and its effects.

There was also a route march on some principal streets of the Municipality by students from selected schools.

Mr Acquah reiterates that the Assembly and the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development and the National Commission for Civic Education, NCCE amongst other stakeholders are working assiduously to ensure that child labour is nipped in the bud.
