Adisadel student denies wrongdoing; case adjourned to ‘after-WASSCE’
The Adisadel College student who was seen in a viral video assaulting his colleague has denied any wrongdoing.
Even though the accused is out on bail, the upcoming WASSCE exams might present a challenge. In view of this, the court has consequently decided to table the case until after the exams.
Both the parents of the involved teenagers and members of the public were present during the court proceedings.
But because the case was so delicate, it was handled in the judge’s chambers.
The case has been postponed until September 27, 2023 by the presiding Judge, His Lordship Eric Oheneba Antwi Boasiako, in order to give the students uninterrupted time to complete their final exams.
Background
After a disturbing viral video showed an Adisadel College student choking his fellow classmate in a dormitory, the police in Cape Coast swiftly took action and arrested the perpetrator.
The student was charged with causing harm and assault and later released into the custody of the school’s Headmaster to appear in court on Friday.
Concerned about the victim’s well-being, the school has recalled him after an initial suspension. He is currently undergoing medical treatment, and the school has arranged for a psychologist to provide him with the essential support and counseling to help him cope with the trauma.
Joseph Osei-Owusu preaches for out of court settlement
First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joesph Osei-Owusu, has expressed a different perspective on the prosecution of the perpetrator involved in the Adisadel College assault incident.
During the 10th-anniversary celebration of Fettehman Senior High School, the Deputy Speaker suggested that the school’s authorities should have handled the matter rather than taking the culprit to a general court for trial.
He emphasized the importance of examining the upbringing of children in the country, considering it a crucial factor in preventing such violent incidents. While condemning the act perpetrated by the student, Osei-Owusu believes that the culprit could have been counseled, allowing him to focus on his studies for a better future.
