16,574 newly reported cases of HIV infections, 9,359 recorded fatalities in 2022
In 2022, Ghana documented a total of 16,574 fresh cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections, marking a decrease from the 18,036 cases recorded in 2021.
The Ghana AIDS Commission, based in Accra, released this information on Tuesday.
The newly reported HIV infections of 16,574 spanned across all age groups. Among those aged 15 and above, there were 13,706 infections, while children aged zero to 14 years accounted for 2,180 cases. Adolescents aged 10 to 19 years constituted 645 infections, and young individuals aged 15 to 24 years represented 739 cases.
Regrettably, the number of AIDS-related deaths across all age groups was 9,359. This included 7,179 deaths among adults aged 15 and above, 2,180 deaths among children aged 0 to 14 years, 645 deaths among adolescents aged 10 to 19 years, and 739 deaths among young people aged 15 to 24 years.
Presently, the cumulative HIV cases in Ghana have reached 354,927, with individuals aged 15 and above accounting for the majority, totaling 330,215 infections.
