Sports Minister sends letter to the President on utilization of World Cup funds

President

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has officially requested confirmation from the Office of the President on how to utilize Ghana’s participation fee from the 2022 World Cup.

Recently, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) received $9 million in cash from FIFA for their participation in the tournament held in Qatar.

During a press conference, the Sports Ministry disclosed their intention to follow a “precedent” in allocating the funds, with a focus on financing preparations for Afcon 2023 and undertaking sports infrastructure rehabilitation in Prampram.

However, before proceeding with their plans, President Akufo-Addo’s permission is required. The Minister stated that they have presented various options to their superiors to seek approval before making any public announcements.

In previous years, such financial rewards have been utilized for the development and construction of sports infrastructure in the country. The GFA has already been in touch with the Sports Ministry regarding their suggestions on how to utilize the funds.

It’s worth noting that Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, performed below expectations in the 2022 World Cup, finishing at the bottom of their group with one win and two losses.
