Abdulgafar Abiola, also known as Cute Abiola, is a popular Nigerian comedian has run into trouble for wearing police uniforms in his skits.

He is subject to a police investigation and may be prosecuted for “disrespectful and derogatory portrayal of the police uniform.”

Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi said in a statement that was tweeted by the force that “the law prohibits an individual, under whatever guise, from rubbishing the police institution or grossly violating its provisions with regards to the use of uniforms”.

He cited two skits by Cute Abiola that were posted on his social media accounts on July 20 and 24 and were deemed offensive.

In one, the comedian is seen donning an officer’s uniform and pleading with a passing driver for cash to buy fuel for a police car that is running low petrol. Another shows a police officer asking for a bribe.

The police spokesperson issued a warning to other skit creators, saying: “The force is committed to upholding the sanctity of the uniform and will pursue due legal process to ensure accountability for any individual or entity that seeks to bring disrepute to the uniform or the institution it represents.”
