RTI Commission holds public lecture on Act 989 in Takoradi
The Right to Information Commission, (RTI Commission), mandated by Act 989 as the sole institution to oversee the implementation of Act 989 has held a public lecture in Takoradi in the Western region in a bid to sensitize the general public on its law -Act 989.
The Executive Secretary of the RTI Commission, Yaw Sarpong Boateng Esq, speaking at the public forum which was held at the Akroma Plaza Hotel, on Thursday, July 27, 2023, said the lecture was necessary as the commission embarks on a nationwide sensitization to create a continuous awareness of the RTI law.
“So as part of the mandate of the RTI Commission, we are to sustain a continuous awareness of the RTI law in the country. And this exercise is to engage the people of the Western Region as part of our nationwide sensitization exercise which we begun 2 years ago.”
“So far, this is the twelfth (12th) region we have come to try and engage with the people to let appreciate what the law is all about”, he added.
The Executive Secretary further entreated all and sundry to not hesitate in seeking information because it is their fundamental human right, adding that, the Commission is positioned to offer the needed assistance.
“Our goal as a Commission is to build an informed citizenry and guarantee all person’s right to know and access to information. In view of this, I entreat citizens to get themselves abreast with Act 989. At the Right to Information Commission, we are committed to delivering responsive and excellent services to all persons; natural or legal. We are pleased to serve you with independence and fairness.”
The RTI law was passed in March 2019 and came into full force in 2020. It was passed with the aim of facilitating public access to information, promoting accountability and transparency and reducing corruption in the public sector.
