Akufo-Addo urges ECOWAS to unite in condemnation of coups
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is calling on all West Africans to firmly reject any form of military takeover within the jurisdiction of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
During Liberia’s 147th Independence Day celebration, President Akufo-Addo expressed that unconstitutional means of changing governments in the sub-region should not be tolerated.
This call comes in the wake of media reports indicating an attempted military coup in Niger, where the presidential guards allegedly seized President Mohamed Bazoum’s residence and key ministries. The African Union (AU) swiftly condemned these actions as “unacceptable.”
President Akufo-Addo emphasized the need to end insecurity in West Africa, as it hinders the much-needed development in the region. He stressed the importance of uniting against coup attempts and ensuring peace and stability for rapid economic progress, which is vital in eradicating poverty in the area.
The President reaffirmed the commitment to democratic governance within the ECOWAS space and urged the rejection of all unconstitutional changes of government.
