TikTok adds text-only posts amidst social media battle

As competition between social media giants heats up, Chinese-owned video streaming app TikTok announces that it will offer text-only posts.

According to the platform, the new feature gives users “another way to express themselves.”

TikTok debuted a brand-new music streaming service earlier this month to compete with services like Spotify and Apple Music.

And on Monday, Elon Musk’s Twitter changed from its iconic blue bird logo to an X in black and white.

Users of TikTok will now have a choice between posting photos, videos, or text under one of three options on the app.

Additionally, they will be able to edit posts by adding sound, location, or Duets, which are video reactions to posts made by other TikTok users.

“These features make it so your text posts are just as dynamic and interactive as any video or photo post,” TikTok said.

Brazil and Indonesia have recently seen the debut of TikTok Music, a brand-new music streaming service owned by China’s ByteDance and operated by TikTok.

The company also launched a beta version of the service last week in Singapore, Australia, and Mexico.

According to a spokesman, users will be able to “listen, share and download the music they have discovered on TikTok, as well as share their favourite tracks and artists with their TikTok community”.

In 2021, TikTok surpassed Google, the dominant US search engine, as the most visited website in the world.

In that same year, the app claimed to have more than a billion active users worldwide.

Rival social media companies, including Instagram owner Meta and Elon Musk’s rebranded Twitter platform X, have become more competitive recently.

This month, 100 countries, including the UK, saw the launch of Meta’s new Threads platform on Apple and Android app stores.

Later, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg claimed that the Threads platform had attracted more than 100 million users in just five days.

Also this week, the blue bird branding on social network Twitter was replaced by a logo featuring a white X on a black background.
