Meta rolls out first big batch of updates for Threads
Meta’s Twitter rival Threads released its first substantial batch of updates on Tuesday since going live two weeks ago, in an effort to maintain momentum.
A post from Cameron Roth, a software engineer working on Threads, lists the new features as a translation button and a tab on users’ activity feeds devoted to showing who has followed them.
By the end of Tuesday, Roth said all new features would be accessible to iOS Threads users.
Since its release, Threads users have cried out for updates. In less than a week, over 100 million people signed up for the new app, but it still lacks many of the features that make Twitter and other platforms popular, like direct messaging and a robust search engine.
According to web traffic analysis company Similarweb, user engagement on Threads has decreased since its debut week. In an effort to keep users on the app, Meta executives have hinted at plans to improve it.
“Early growth was off the charts, but more importantly 10s of millions of people now come back daily … The focus for the rest of the year is improving the basics and retention,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Threads post Monday.
In addition to bug fixes and other enhancements, Tuesday’s updates include the ability to subscribe to and receive notifications from accounts that a user does not already follow. They also include a “+” button that enables users to follow new accounts from the comments on a post.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram who is in charge of Threads, has also made hints about intentions to launch a desktop version of the app, a feed of only accounts a user follows, and an edit button.
