‘Galamsey’ cause of flood in Gwira Municipality – Nana Ette Akrade II asserts
About 70 houses within the Gwira Banso Traditional Area of the Evaluae-Ajomoro-Gwira Municipality in the Western Region have had their properties destroyed by rains.
According to the Chief of the Area, Nana Ette Akrade II attributed the unfortunate incident to the overflow of the river as well as the activities of illegal mining. He said properties running into millions of cedis were lost.
He mentioned that victims have so far received relief items in the form of cooking oil, bags of rice, and others from benevolent entities.
The Chief said, ” The flood came as a result of an overflow of the river here. This is the first of its kind. Approximately 70 households have been affected, fortunately, the traditional leaders and another company have supported the victims with 250 bags of rice, 250 pieces of sardine as well as 250 bottles of oil. Mining activities contributed to the occurrence of this incident.”
Nana Ette Akrade disclosed that since the incident, personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO have not been in touch with the affected members of the community.
He assured the affected members of the community of receiving a parcel of land latest by September to rebuild their homes.
” From the palace, we are sending this message to residents not to build houses in the affected areas. We will do well to relocate them by September. NADMO authorities haven’t been here since the occurrence of this incident but the MCE has sent a delegation to access the situation,” Nana Akrade said.
According to the Chief, this year’s fall seemed heavier and can be compared to the 1968 heavy downpour that destroyed many things in the community.
