Former Man City defender Benjamin Mendy signs for Ligue 1 club Lorient
Benjamin Mendy, the former Manchester City defender, has signed a two-year contract with Ligue 1 club Lorient.
Following a retrial, Mendy was found not guilty of rape and attempted rape by a jury at Chester Crown Court on Friday. Earlier this year, he had been acquitted of sexual offenses against multiple women, but the jury was unable to reach verdicts on the two charges, leading to the retrial.
At the age of 29, Mendy became the Premier League’s most expensive defender when Manchester City acquired him from Monaco for a fee of £52 million in 2017. During his time at City, he won three league titles and was also a part of France’s victorious squad in the 2018 World Cup.
Mendy’s contract with Manchester City expired at the end of June, and he was subsequently released by the club. His last appearance for the team was in August 2021.
