Twitter goes silent on dismissed staff in Africa
Former Twitter employees who were based in Ghana claim the company has ceased all communications with their lawyers, following the mass layoffs in November of last year.
They claim their severance packages were not paid, as well.
Since May, when negotiations were nearly complete, according to Agency Seven Seven, which is representing the disgruntled former employees, Twitter has not gotten in touch with them or the staff.
The agency claims that the social media giant, through its legal team were on the verge of agreeing to pay the fired employees three months’ worth of salaries as well as repatriation funds for those employed from outside Ghana, but it has been quiet for weeks.
According to Agency Seven Seven, it is currently looking into alternative strategies for moving forward. It worries that the absence of a settlement might create a negative precedent for how employees in Ghana are treated by foreign-based businesses.
Twitter opened its only Africa office in Ghana last November and had about a dozen employees. However, after Elon Musk acquired the business, he implemented a global staff reduction program that resulted in their termination.
