West Ham has shown interest in securing the services of Manchester United defender Harry Maguire. The 30-year-old English defender’s future at Old Trafford has become uncertain due to the emergence of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as Erik ten Hag’s preferred center-back options.
On Sunday, Maguire revealed that he had been stripped of the captaincy at Old Trafford, expressing his disappointment at losing the armband after holding it for three and a half years. Maguire’s contract with Manchester United is set to run until 2025.
Manchester United is also in need of player sales to support Ten Hag’s efforts in reshaping the squad during the current transfer window, particularly as they approach the potential signing of Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Although Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City for a fee of £80 million in 2019, he is among the players that Ten Hag would be willing to sell if a suitable offer is received. Maguire is aware of the importance of regular playing time ahead of Euro 2024 in Germany next summer.
However, he remains content at Old Trafford and takes pride in his role as captain.
Furthermore, having overcome various injury issues last season, Maguire is confident that he will have a significant role to play in Manchester United’s upcoming season.
West Ham manager David Moyes is eager to bolster his squad after the departure of captain Declan Rice, which could generate £105 million. Moyes is considering Ajax’s Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez as a potential replacement for Rice, but Harry Maguire would be a valuable addition to the defense, especially considering the injury problems faced by West Ham’s preferred center-back duo, Kurt Zouma and Nayed Aguerd, during the previous season.
