Minority Kicks Against Govenment’s Decision To Privatise TOR

Ranking member on the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, John Jinapor has kicked against plans by the government to hand over the operation of Tema Oil Refinery to a private entity, Torentco Asset Management.

He says Torentco Asset Management has no track record in refining crude and the said contract will not offer value for money in the country.

Mr Jinapor addressed the news conference in Parliament.

“The Minority once again has been following yet another emerging scandal in the energy sector. It does appear that even when we decide that we want to take a rest the Akifo-Addo-led government will always inundate us with scandals, especially in the energy sector.

We have been keenly following developments at the Tema Oil Refinery. We have become aware by the Akuffo Addo government to lease Tema Oil Refinery for six years to a company known as Torrentco Asset Management Company,”

He continued, “Our checks have indicated that this company has no track record when it comes to an oil refinery and its balance sheet suggests that it cannot provide the needed support to Tema Oil Refinery.

If the Tema oil refinery is well positioned and strategically positioned it will result in millions if not billions of savings when it comes to import substitution.

If the government does not heed our call we shall use every legitimate and constitutional process available to us to ensure that we compel this government to listen to the good people of Ghana.”
