Ethiopia And Egypt To Resume Talks Over Controversial Dam

Ethiopia and Egypt have decided to pick up their discussions about the contentious hydroelectric mega-dam that Addis Ababa is constructing over the Blue Nile River.

The dam, which is almost finished, has been the source of diplomatic disputes between the two nations since Egypt worries that it would affect its vital water supply while Ethiopia regards it as a crucial component of its plans to electrify millions of homes.

According to a joint statement released by the Ethiopian prime minister’s office, at a meeting in Cairo between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, the two leaders decided to negotiate the filling of the dam’s reservoir and to try to reach a resolution within four months.

Over the course of the last three wet seasons, the enormous reservoir was filled as the dam wall was constructed.

Due to the fact that this was done without a legally binding agreement between the three countries, Egypt and Sudan, the other country downstream, stated their disapproval of it.

The decision to resume negotiations has been praised by the African Union. The building of the dam was supposed to start in 2011 and be finished in six years.
