Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, has announced that his party will obstruct any government efforts to raise taxes during the mid-year budget review. He emphasized that instead of burdening the already struggling Ghanaian citizens, the NDC MPs will ensure that the government reduces its expenditure.

Dr. Forson pointed out that there is significant room for cutting expenses, and he criticized the government for its apparent lack of discipline and concern for the people’s welfare.

Expressing his anticipation of potential new measures, Dr. Forson referred to the IMF’s request for additional measures equivalent to 1% of GDP, questioning their origin. He emphasized the need for the government to prioritize cutting excessive expenditures rather than imposing new taxes or increasing existing ones.

In an interview with JoyNews, he stated that the government aims to enjoy a lavish lifestyle at the expense of the Ghanaian people, and such spending should be curtailed.

On July 25, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, will present the 2023 mid-year budget review to Parliament, marking his first presentation after the government’s successful implementation of an IMF deal.

Ahead of this event, various industry stakeholders have called on the government to take the opportunity to eliminate certain taxes, including the tax on sanitary pads and others.
