Elon Musk announces new AI Company
Elon Musk on Wednesday officially announced the creation of a new artificial intelligence-focused company, after months of teasing plans to create a ChatGPT competitor.
The company, called xAI, unveiled a website and a group of a dozen employees. The website for the new business states that Musk will serve as its CEO and that it “will work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission ”.
“The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe,” the website states, echoing language Musk has used before to describe his AI ambitions.
Musk initially supported OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, but later criticized it for adding protections meant to stop the popular chatbot from responding in a biased or sexist manner.
“The danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly,” Musk tweeted in December, responding to a Twitter user who asked OpenAI’s CEO if it was possible to “turn off the woke settings” on ChatGPT.
Musk’s announcement of the new company comes months after he warned in an interview that he believes AI could lead to “civilization destruction” and joined other tech leaders in calling for a pause in an “out of control” AI race.
The announcement of Musk’s latest venture comes at a precarious moment for Musk.
After Meta released a rival app called Threads, Twitter, the company he purchased for $44 billion in October, now faces an uncertain future. In less than a week, Meta’s app had over 100 million sign-ups. Meanwhile, there were numerous reports of a decline in Twitter usage.
The unrest at Twitter began after Musk for months alienated some users and advertisers by laying off employees, enacting divisive policy changes, and making a number of inflammatory statements.
Musk also owns Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company in addition to Twitter.
