Senegal Politician Charged For Criticising President

A leading Senegalese opposition politician’s Attorney claims that his client has been charged over remarks he made concerning President Macky Sall.

After saying that the president might reconsider his decision not to run for a third term in the upcoming election, Birame Souleye Diop was detained.

Following significant protests, President Sall disqualified himself from seeking reelection earlier this month.

Mr Diop is an MP for the Pastef party, whose leader, Ousmane Sonko, was sentenced to two years in prison in June and is therefore ineligible to run for president in the election scheduled for February of the following year.
