The staff groups of the Volta River Authority (VRA) have announced plans to petition President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo regarding the proposed merger of the VRA with Bui Power Authority, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), and the creation of an independent Thermal Power Authority from VRA’s thermal plants.

The groups, strongly opposing the merger, argue that the proposed changes are an attempt to lease the authority to political cronies.

Theophilus Tetteh Ahia, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of VRA, told Citi News that they will employ all legal avenues to halt the merger.

As Ghanaians and major stakeholders, the staff groups emphasize their commitment to using legitimate forces and legal processes to prevent Ghanaians from being shortchanged.

They believe they cannot sit idly by and allow state assets to be sold to the highest bidder and are determined to resist the merger.

Ahia also indicated that they plan to petition the Trades Union Congress (TUC) due to the lack of consultation.

He reiterated that the staff are opposed to the proposed legislation and the potential sale of VRA’s thermal plants, emphasizing their disapproval of the direction the merger is taking.
