Ghana’s under-20 men’s and women’s volleyball teams have secured second place in the African Under-21 Volleyball Championships.

Despite facing a challenging journey lasting 72 hours by road to Niger for the Championships, Ghana’s under-20 teams achieved remarkable results. The women’s team began their campaign with a 0-3 defeat against Nigeria but bounced back to defeat Benin and Niger, securing a spot in the final. Unfortunately, they were unable to clinch the title, losing to Nigeria in the final match.

The under-20 men’s team started the competition with a convincing victory against Benin, winning in three straight sets. They followed it up with another dominant performance, defeating Cote d’Ivoire.

However, they suffered their first defeat of the competition in the final against the same opponents. Ghana Volleyball officials have expressed concerns about the final match.

According to George Tettey, the President of Ghana Volleyball, there are suspicions of deliberate actions to prevent Ghana from winning. Tettey stated, “In the men’s encounter against Niger, it was a deliberate act to get us out of the way. The French bloc will not want both trophies to go to English-speaking countries. Both officials in the final matches were French officials, and their decisions were questionable. They allowed the re-registration of four senior players after the competition had already started, which goes against the rules of CAVB (Confederation of African Volleyball), but strangely enough, they permitted it.”
