Threads: Ten million sign up for Meta’s Twitter rival within hours of launch
Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg says ten million users signed up for the newly launched Threads app in the first seven hours.
He pitched the app as a “friendly” rival to Twitter, which Elon Musk acquired in October.
According to experts, Twitter users dissatisfied with recent platform changes may move to Threads.
Users of Threads can post up to 500 characters and it has many Twitter-like features.
Earlier, Mr. Zuckerberg stated that keeping the platform “friendly… will ultimately be the key to its success”.
But Mr. Musk retorted, “It is infinitely preferable to be attacked by strangers on Twitter, than indulge in the false happiness of hide-the-pain Instagram.”
When asked on Threads if the platform will be “bigger than Twitter,” Mr. Zuckerberg responded: “It’ll take some time, but I think there should be a public conversations app with 1 billion+ people on it.
“Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn’t nailed it. Hopefully we will.”
The amount of data the app might use has drawn criticism from rivals. According to the Apple App Store, this may include browsing, health, and financial data connected to users’ identities.
Over a hundred countries, including the UK, now offer Threads for download, but the EU has not yet done so due to regulatory issues.
