Fire Officer To Serve Prison Term For Assaulting Bailiff

Fire Service Officer Emmanuel Ayitah Quansah has received a two-day jail sentence from the High Court of Accra.

He was found guilty of contempt for teaming up with family members to assault a court bailiff who had come to deliver papers to them.

“Assault of Court Officers is on the rise and must be nipped in the bud,” stated Justice Sarah Aryee.

Theophilus Donkor, the attorney for the Judicial Service Staff Association, bemoaned the rise in attacks on bailiffs who are merely carrying out their official duties.

He said in this instance case, the said Bailiff was serving a Court process on convict Ayitah Quansah when he, together with members of his house battered the Bailiff.

According to Mr Donkor, the convict should have known that the bailiff was only carrying out his official duties and that if he had any issues with the method of service or the process, he should have brought them up in court for review rather than taking immediate action.

The bailiff attempted to serve the court papers on the inmate, but he refused to take them, the lawyer claims, so he threw them at him. The conduct enraged the fire service officer, who then intervened on his own amid claims that the court papers ought to have been delivered to him at his workplace.

As a result of the convict’s inability to provide an explanation for his behaviour, the judge punished him.
