Ethiopia: Amhara region under curfew after shooting
A night-time curfew has been imposed and tensions have risen as a result of the killing of a security chief in a town in Ethiopia‘s Amhara region.
Following the decision to dissolve the region’s paramilitary group, the security situation in Amhara has been getting worse since April.
State-level Special Forces have existed in every state of the nation, but the government has moved to integrate them into the military and police.
As a result, deadly anti-government demonstrations started in Amhara.
Head of the local security department, Abdu Hussein, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants on Tuesday, which led to the curfew being implemented in Shewa Robit town.
The killing in Amhara is the third of its kind in as many days. In another district, a police chief and security director had already been shot to death.
The movement of people and vehicles is prohibited after 18:00 local time in Shewa Robit, which is about 200 kilometers (124 miles) northeast of Addis Ababa, the nation’s capital, according to authorities.
The Ethiopian army needed assistance from the Amhara special forces to defeat Tigrayan fighters who had instigated a rebellion against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration in 2020.
A peace agreement was signed in November of last year, bringing an end to the conflict.
