Minority to abstain from Parliamentary business on Quayson’s trial day

Minority

The Minority in Parliament has decided to abstain from participating in Parliamentary proceedings on days when the re-elected Member of Parliament for the Assin North constituency, James Gyakye Quayson, is scheduled to appear in court for an ongoing criminal case against him.

Mr. Quayson was sworn in as an MP for Assin North on Tuesday, July 4.

In a show of support, the Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson, declared that the entire Minority caucus would accompany Mr. Quayson to court and refrain from engaging in any parliamentary business on those specific days.

This decision is a form of protest by the Minority, as they believe that Mr. Quayson is facing unjust persecution. The solidarity with their colleague is aimed at expressing their displeasure with the situation.

Mr. Forson emphasized that Mr. Quayson’s election victory sends a strong message to all politicians that Ghanaians cannot be influenced by money for votes. He stated that the people of Assin North have demonstrated their resistance to being swayed by financial inducements or threats, and this should serve as a reminder to politicians that voters will exercise their franchise based on their conscience in the upcoming 2024 elections. The Minority is resolute in their stance and determined to stand by Mr. Quayson throughout this legal process.
