Expose Illegal Activities On The Sea – Minister of Fisheries Tell Fishers

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson has advised fisherfolks to abide by the regulations binding the closed season.

Speaking to a section of about 900 canoe fishermen operating in the Aboadze Community and its enclave in the Shama District of the Western Region, she tasked all fishers to be each other’s watchmen and report wrongdoings to the appropriate quarters for action to be taken.

The visit forms part of activities to sensitize fishers and also to donate some relief items to the fisherfolks as they observe the closed season.

Honourable Hawa Koomson further urged the fishermen to desist from engaging in Illegal, Unreported, Unregulated fishing practices that threaten the sustenance of the ocean.

She further urged fishermen and fisherfolks in the country not to politicise the closed season by the government which is meant to help rebuild the dwindling fish stock.

According to Mrs Koomson, the Ministry is in discussions with a few groups about training fishermen in alternative livelihood initiatives and providing them with health screenings.

To avoid hoarding and other unethical practices that had characterized the premix regime and had recently caused a significant increase in the price of fish at the shore, the Minister tasked them with finding land for the construction of a fuel station so that the commodity would be dispensed near shore.
