The Taliban have recently imposed a new restriction on women by ordering hair and beauty salons in Afghanistan to close.
Businesses were given one month to comply with the directive, beginning on July 2, when they were first informed of it, a Vice and Virtue Ministry spokesman told the media.
Since the Taliban seized power in 2021, women’s freedoms have gradually decreased.
Teenage girls and women have been barred from classrooms, gyms and parks, and most recently, have been banned from working for the United Nations.
In addition, according to the Taliban, women must wear clothing that only exposes their eyes and be accompanied by a male relative if they are traveling more than 72 kilometers (48 miles).
Despite international criticism, protests by women and advocacy on their behalf by activists, the restrictions have persisted.
When the Taliban were last in power between 1996 and 2001, closing beauty salons was just one of many restrictions they imposed. After the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, they did, however, reopen the salons.
They remained open even after the Taliban retook control two years ago after US forces withdrew. But storefront windows were frequently covered, and pictures of women outside of salons were spray painted over to obscure their faces.
No justification for the ban or alternatives—if any—that women would have access to after the salons closed have been provided by the Taliban government.
