Peace Council steps in to mediate Agyinasare-Nogokpo controversy
A meeting took place between the Chiefs and Elders of the Somey Traditional Area and a delegation from the National Peace Council (NPC), led by His Eminence Numo Blafo Akotia Omaetu III, a member of the council’s governing board.
The purpose of the meeting, chaired by Torgbi Adamah III, the Paramount Chief of the Somey Traditional Area, was to discuss the controversy surrounding comments made by Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, the founder and general overseer of the Perez Chapel International. The goal was to find a peaceful and unified resolution to the issue.
During a summit at the Perez auditorium in Accra, the Archbishop referred to Nogokpo as the “demonic headquarters of the Volta Region.” This statement angered the people of Nogokpo and the larger Volta region, leading to criticism of the clergyman on social media platforms.
The chiefs and elders of the Somey Traditional Area gave the Archbishop a two-week ultimatum to retract his comments and apologize to the people.
The deadline for the ultimatum has already passed. Torgbi Adamah informed the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the meeting that both the Peace Council and the Somey Traditional Council agreed to resolve the issue amicably.
The Paramount Chief stated that they had communicated their position to the Peace Council, tasking them with conveying it to the Archbishop. The Somey Traditional Council has given the Archbishop a one-week ultimatum to withdraw his controversial statement and issue an unreserved apology to the people of Nogokpo, the Somey Traditional Area, and the entire Volta region. Torgbi Adamah mentioned that the Traditional Council had instructed its lawyers to officially inform the Archbishop of their decision and stance.
He clarified that the one-week ultimatum would begin on the day the Archbishop officially received the letter from the traditional council’s lawyers. If the Archbishop fails to comply with the traditional council’s demand for an apology, the Somey Traditional Council will take appropriate action.
The Paramount Chief acknowledged that there has long been a negative perception of the people of the Volta region. He emphasized that the Archbishop, as a respected and experienced man of God, should not have made such divisive comments. Instead, he should be uniting people. Torgbi Adamah stressed the importance of an apology to resolve the matter, expressing the dissatisfaction of the Traditional Council.
Numo Blafo Akotia Omaetu III expressed gratitude to the Somey Traditional Council for their warm reception and understanding. He assured them of the Peace Council’s dedication to resolving the issue in a peaceful and harmonious manner.
The meeting was attended by several members of the Volta regional Peace Council, including its Chairman, Rev. Seth Kwesi Mawutor.
