Tanker Drivers – We will call off the strike if roads to fuel depots are fixed
The National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union is demanding that the government demonstrate its commitment to repairing the extremely poor roads leading to its depots in Takoradi, Tema, and Kumasi, which are operated by Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST).
Due to the deteriorating working conditions caused by these roads, the drivers have initiated an indefinite strike. Today, they are scheduled to meet with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to discuss the situation.
George Nyaunu, the Chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers union, expressed that the strike will continue until the government takes steps to grade the roads they use. He emphasized that the drivers are not asking for extensive repairs like asphalt or concrete at the moment, but rather for the roads to be graded and compacted to provide some relief.
They believe that by doing so, the government would be addressing their immediate concerns since the depots in Tema, Takoradi, and Kumasi cover a distance of less than 20 km.
Additionally, the drivers are urging the President to intervene and ensure that the deplorable roads are fixed, recognizing the critical role these roads play in their daily operations.
