ECG Tema Region decries encroachment
The Electricity Company of Ghana’s Tema Region is expressing concern over the widespread construction of structures within its utility corridors, posing risks to both life and property.
Ing. Ankomah Emmanuel, the General Manager of the region, revealed that the encroachment primarily occurs from chop bar operators, fitting shops, and various businesses utilizing metal containers such as salons, barbershops, and provision shops.
These structures are erected within the utility corridors, as well as in close proximity to transformers, substations, and overhead cables, thereby hindering repair work at times.
Ing. Ankomah emphasized that this issue has become alarmingly prevalent throughout the entire Tema Region, encompassing areas from Nungua, Tema, Afienya, Lower Manya Krobo, Yilo Krobo, Prampram, Ningo, Sege, Ada, Sokpoe, Juapong, and surrounding regions. He noted that this situation is present in all districts under the jurisdiction of the Tema Region.
He appealed to those involved in such activities to exercise caution and desist from encroaching on utility corridors, highlighting the potential dangers to lives and property.
During a brief media interaction, Ing. Ankomah further urged the relevant state agencies in the respective jurisdictions to address this issue promptly and ensure that utility corridors remain free from such encroachments.
