United States: Woman fatally shoots Uber driver she believed was kidnapping her
A US woman who allegedly thought was being kidnapped by her Uber driver, has been charged with murder for fatally shooting the driver, according to police.
Phoebe Copas believed she was being taken into Mexico, according to the El Paso, Texas police department.
The driver, Daniel Piedra Garcia, was shot afterwards, according to a statement from the police.
The 52-year-old died in a hospital, after being kept on life support for several days.
Copas noticed traffic signs that read Juarez, Mexico while she was in the car, according to police records.
The two cities are contiguous on either side of the US-Mexico border.
According to additional police documentation, Copas pulled a gun from her handbag and shot the driver in the head after believing she was being kidnapped.
The vehicle then ran into barriers before coming to a stop.
Copas, a Kentucky native who was in the city to see her boyfriend, allegedly called 911, took a picture of the driver, and texted it to her boyfriend.
In a statement, El Paso police said “the investigation does not support that a kidnapping took place or that Piedra was veering from Copas’ destination”.
