Jordan Ayew has spoken about the impact of his father, Abedi Pele, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time.
Despite his father’s legendary status and reputation, the Crystal Palace forward has always strived to establish his own identity on the field.
Beginning his career at Marseille, the same club where his father achieved iconic status, Ayew has now made a name for himself in the Premier League. He holds the record for the most goals scored by a Ghanaian player in Premier League history, an impressive total of 33 goals.
During the previous season, Ayew achieved a significant milestone by scoring his 100th career goal. Out of those goals, 19 have been for the Ghana national team. Since making his debut in 2010, he has demonstrated consistency by making over 90 appearances for his country. Despite growing up in the shadow of his father’s name, Ayew has remained unaffected by the inevitable comparisons. In an interview with Crystal Palace’s official website, he stated, “I grew up [being known as Abedi’s son], so it didn’t really have an impact on me.”
“My dad always told me, ‘The football doesn’t lie. If you’re not good, everyone will see that you’re not good. You just need to prove people wrong on the pitch.'”
“Since I was a child, that’s what I’ve been trying to do—demonstrate that I possess my own qualities and can be an influential figure for my country and the community,” Ayew added.
Ayew’s determination to establish his own path in football has been fueled by his father’s guidance and the motivation to showcase his own abilities.
