The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has, for the past four years, received over GH¢446 million to fight corruption.
This was revealed in the 2022 Government Waste Report released by the Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI).
According to the report fighting corruption is just like fighting the government’s own evil. Notwithstanding the importance of the OSP, the fight against corruption looks endless and wasteful spending.
It is imperative to note that, corruption in Ghana has not seen any significant truncation since the Corruption Perception Index still disclosed that Ghana was ranked 73 out of 180 countries with the same score of 43 as of 2021,” the report said.
The area of government’s wasteful expenditure, report said several key areas contribute to the government’s wasteful spending.
“The major factor is the lack of transparent and accountable procurement processes,” the report’s portions said. This means that ineffective bidding processes, weak oversight procedures, and instances of corruption result in exorbitant contract prices and the waste of public dollars.
The existence of unnecessary or outdated government offices and initiatives is another cause. These organizations frequently do the same tasks twice, leading to poor resource allocation and extra administrative expenses.
Such programs and organizations can benefit from rationalization and streamlining, which can assist reduce waste and reroute funding to more useful uses. Cost overruns and improper resource allocation are frequently the results of incomplete project feasibility analysis, inflated cost forecasts, and lax spending oversight.
