Koforidua: 26-year-old farmer remanded for killing girlfriend
A 26-year-old farmer named Godwin Darko has been remanded into police custody by Koforidua Magistrate Court A after he reported himself to the police for killing his girlfriend in Trom Junction 5, a suburb of Koforidua over the weekend. He is scheduled to reappear in court on July 4, 2023.
According to the prosecution, Godwin Darko had been in a six-month relationship with the deceased, Felicia Abena Oparebea. On Saturday, during a disagreement over an aborted pregnancy, Darko stabbed Oparebea multiple times in the neck, causing her instant death.
After fleeing from the scene of the murder, Darko confided in his mother, who happens to be the Queen mother of Suhum Nifa Ankobea. She willingly accompanied him to the police station, where he turned himself in.
The police prosecutor, Sergeant George Defia, informed the court that the murder weapon and a bunch of keys used by the suspect in the crime have yet to be recovered. He requested that the court not take Darko’s plea at this time, as investigations are still ongoing. The Eastern Regional Police Command is dedicated to unraveling the recent cases of spousal murders in the region.
The presiding judge, Her Honour Nana Ama Dabbah Fynn, accepted the prosecution’s plea. However, she charged the police to conduct a speedy, effective, and efficient investigation, as the court will not tolerate any unnecessary delays.
Nana Dede Klottey Suhum Nifa Ankobea Hemaa, the mother of the suspect and the Queen mother, appealed to the media for calm, urging both families to approach the burial process of the deceased with understanding and peace.
