It’s Unacceptable To Fire Live Gunfire At Suspects – Martin Kpebu

Police

Martin Kpebu, a Human Rights Attorney, has criticized the police for confronting suspects with live ammunition.

He stated that “the practice is unacceptable and condemnable”.

In response to the shooting event in Bortianor, Mr Kpebu joined the demands for an impartial investigation into the case.

Mr Kpebu encouraged the Minister to form what he called a really objective and independent commission.

He claimed that this is crucial since we cannot accept the police’s statements at face value. This, he claimed, is supported by the fact that, in other instances, such as at Asawase, when the Police fatally shot seven people they believed to be armed robbers, a committee of inquiry later determined the accused men were innocent of the charges.

In order to allow the Public Relations Officers to conduct interviews with the media on important topics like these, Mr Kpebu encouraged the Inspector General of Police to reconsider the service’s present communication policy.

In the current system, police public relations officers no longer provide media interviews, except for the occasional news release, making it impossible for journalists to get information or question the police more on important matters.
