Silvio Berlusconi, a flamboyant media tycoon and politician who served as Italy’s president four times, has passed away at 86.
The Italian electorate was drawn to his colourful demeanour and supported him despite claims of corruption and double-dealing.
He served as prime minister four times, and he recovered each time it appeared that his political career was ended.
He returned to Parliament nine years after being barred from holding public office for tax fraud and was elected to the Italian Senate just before he turned 86 in September 2022.
His penchant for surrounding himself with young ladies and the attendant scandals from his private life has made national and international headlines.
